I just completed an Instagram live session and was met with this same question once again. People always ask me why they become immune to their deodorant and why it stops working after a certain period of time. Product immunity is something you hear a lot about in beauty so today I want to talk about whether this is truly the case.
Do Your Armpits Become Immune or Adapt to Your Deodorant?
A quick search online will show you many articles and blogs that claim you need to switch your skincare products often because you become immune to the ingredients. This is absurd and untrue.
Your Body Has Changed, Don’t Blame The Product
If a product you use no longer works, it has to do with your body’s physiological changes, not an immunity to the product’s ingredients. For example when your facial cleanser stops working, your skin has changed in some way which means the product may no longer be suitable. Maybe your skin is oilier or dryer than it used to be, due to stress or hormones so you need a new product that addresses these needs. Therefore, if a deodorant no longer works for you, it is because the conditions of your armpits have changed.

Bacteria Is Often the Main Issue
Above all else, an increased production of bacteria in your underarms is often the culprit. If all you do is use heavily scented bar soap under your armpits, you are not cleaning everything properly. Not only will there be bacteria from the day leftover, but there will also be deodorant buildup from the day before. Similar to hand washing, you need an antibacterial soap. Ensure that it has no alcohol in it, just like the antibacterial soap that I have created. You can see from our consumer testimonials how it changed their odor problem.
The Way You Wash Is Just As Important
People think they can quickly swipe some soap under their armpits and rinse off in a few seconds. However, what they don’t realize is that this is not enough to properly clean the underarm area. So here’s what you can do differently to make sure you are properly rinsing the area.
What you need to do is to get in there with an antibacterial bar soap and wash your armpits 20 times just like you would do with your hands. This will handle whatever changes your body has to improve the issue.

What Else Can Cause More Body Odor Than Usual?
Stress
Many people sweat when they’re stressed, which causes bacterial buildup and odor. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or biofeedback to control the way you react in high impact situations.
Diet
Caffeinated beverages and spicy food can make you sweat more or have more body odor than usual. Eliminating these foods may help.
Hot Weather
Try to stay in a cool environment when possible or find a shady area when you are outside.
Hormonal Changes
Whether you are going through pregnancy, menopause, or puberty, you will notice a fluctuation of changes occurring.
Clothing
Choose clothing that is suitable for your daily activity. Avoid synthetic fabrics and opt for natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk so that your armpits can breathe.
See A Doctor If You Experience Any of the Following:
- You suddenly begin to sweat much more or less than usual.
- Sweating disrupts your daily routine
- You experience night sweats for no apparent reason.
- You notice a change in your body odor when you are taking new medications such as antidepressants.
Listen To Your Body
The overall conclusion is that your armpits have not adapted or become immune to anything in the deodorant you use. Rather, your skin microbiome has changed with the passage of time. In fact, many things can change how your armpit behaves that range from menopause, to stress and hormones. Your body is constantly evolving and you need to be aware of them. Above all else, addressing the bacteria under the arm is key.
