The most common type of rash people experience when switching to a natural deodorant is a moisture rash. This occurs because the pores are no longer blocked by aluminum, so the armpits are free to sweat. Sweat builds up under the arms, which is an enclosed area, leaving nowhere for the moisture to go as the underarms have no air to breathe. Pairing moist skin with the constant rubbing and friction that occurs under your arms is a recipe for a red, itchy, bumpy rash.
Here are our top 3 tips for combating a moisture rash:
1. Apply a Starch
Apply a natural starch powder, such as arrowroot powder or cornstarch, to the underarms after applying your deodorant. The starch will help absorb some of the moisture that gets trapped on the skin.
2. Switch Over In Cooler Months
Make the transition to natural deodorant during cooler months. This will ensure that by the time the weather gets warmer again, your body has gone through the stages of detox, and you will be less likely to experience the excess sweat that comes along with the detox phase.
3. Wear Looser Shirts
Wear looser clothing made from natural materials, such as cotton. Wearing tight fitting, synthetic fabric will only further trap moisture, not allowing your underarms to breathe.
Disclaimer: For severe rashes, or a rash that persists longer than 2-3 days please discontinue use, and consult a doctor.
